Hair Extensions After Care Tips
A woman’s hair is her glory and women across Melbourne commonly contact us for tips on how to achieve the best out of their hair, particularly when they have Hair Extensions.
Women who have invested in high quality Remy Human Hair Extensions, deserve expert quality advice. So here are some tips for caring for your Hair Extensions after visiting the salon.
Shampooing and Conditioning Hair Extensions
Avoid using Shampoos and Conditioners containing Sulfates. What women often don’t realise is that Sulfate strips oil from the hair and this is the leading cause of hair breakage, as well as knotting and tangling. Avoiding sulfates will ensure that your Hair Extensions remain soft and silky, rather than dry and frizzy.
Want to know which products you should be using? Contact the team at Melbourne Human Hair Extensions on 0439 349 946 for advice. We have some preferred Shampoos and Conditioners that we absolutely love.
A few other tips include:
- We recommend washing your hair only 1 – 2 times per week.
- Before wetting the hair, ensure that you gently remove any tangles. To do this, use either your fingers or a wide tooth comb.
- Gently massage your scalp by working your fingers horizontally between each row of hair.
- Do not excessively scrub your hair. This will cause it to matte and / or tangle.
- After shampooing, gently wring out your hair to remove excess moisture.
- When conditioning, apply conditioner to the mid lengths and ends and work through the hair gently using your fingers. Also, leave the conditioner on for a few minutes before rinsing thoroughly.
- Applying a Leave In Conditioner will help to maintain moisture and shine but it is important that you use Leave In Conditioner sparingly on the Hair Extensions.
Brushing Your Hair Extensions
We recommend that you try to avoid brushing wet Hair Extensions with a Hair Brush. We suggest that you gently brush wet Hair Extensions with a wide tooth comb.
When the hair is dry, we suggest that you use a soft brush and that you start by brushing the ends of your hair and then work your way upwards. This will ensure that you don’t tangle the ends or place to much pressure on the extensions.
When brushing your hair, grab hold of the section above it. This will minimise pulling at the hair.
Finally, when you are brushing your hair, use your free hand to put pressure on the silicon microbeads. The more you can support them during the brushing process, the better.
Drying and Styling
Avoid excessive use of heat, flat irons, blow dryers and curling irons as this has the potential to shorten the lifespan of your Human Hair Extensions. Whilst we are not saying you need to stop using any equipment that produces heat, it is recommended that you treat your Hair Extensions as you would your natural hair and you either minimise how often you apply heat and / or you use the appropriate heat protection products. Also, when using equipment that radiates heat, ensure that it is on a Low to Medium heat level only.
Swimming
At Melbourne Human Hair Extensions we always recommend that our clients wear a swimming cap if they are going swimming in chlorine or salt water.
If this is not possible, we suggest that you tie your hair in a gentle bun with a scrunchie, rather than an elastic band or another option is to plait the hair. The reason we suggest this, is tying the hair up or in a plait will ensure that there is less opportunity for the hair to become matted when you are swimming. If you are Hair Extensions are loose in the water, there is a high chance that they will tangle.
Upon exiting the water be sure to apply fresh water and rinse any chlorine or salt water off the Hair Extensions as soon as possible. Also, if you have Leave In Conditioner handy, apply it once you have rinsed the hair thoroughly.
Sleeping
Do not go to bed with wet or damp hair as there is the potential for you to wake up and your Hair Extensions look and feel like a bird’s nest.
To prevent your hair from tangling or matting during the night, we suggest you either plait your hair in a low, loose plait or gently clip the hair to the top of your head. Avoid using elastic bands.
Finally, if you want to extend the life of your Hair Extensions, we strongly suggest that you sleep on a satin pillowcase. They are superb for reducing friction and for ensuring that you wake up with silky, smooth hair in the morning.
Colouring Hair Extensions
Whilst it is not prohibited and the Hair Extensions can be coloured, we strongly suggest that where possible, you try to avoid colouring your Hair Extensions.
If you do wish to colour your Remy Human Hair Extensions, here are some tips:
- Only apply ammonia free semi-permanent colours.
- Only apply colours which are darker than the Hair Extensions colour. Do not attempt to lighten the Hair Extensions or you will damage them.
- Do not highlight the Hair Extensions. For example, do not have foils applied.
We also strongly recommend that you avoid perming or chemically straightening your Hair Extensions.
If you absolutely want to colour your Hair Extensions, the best piece of advice we can give you is to visit a Professional Melbourne Hairdresser who specialises in the application of Hair Extensions. They will be able to provide you with the best advice and also apply the colour using their hairdressing expertise.
